The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the legacy and commitment of the family owners has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.
